About Me KJude
Our bodies are designed to be well. Using the natural approach as much as possible enables us humans to look, and more importantly, to feel our very best.
My quest for natural health and beauty began in my late teens after some medical missteps and I began blogging as an extension of all the research I had done for over 30 years. Several things happened to me that cemented my belief that ‘conventional wisdom’ and Western Medicine had very little to do with the way I wanted to live and feel, OR the way I believed women should be treated by the medical establishment. I have read countless books on health, nutrition and natural beauty because of this, realizing that the whole body needed to be addressed.
While it’s hard for me to stick to one particular beauty regimen, I’m passionate about all women (and men) taking the time to concentrate on their individual health needs, because your outside reflects what is going on with the inside.
I do have a hard time not giving my opinion if I think it’s needed, but it stems from my wish to help others. I meet so many women in my line of work who are at a loss for which direction to go as we are leaving the comfort of doing ‘what the doctor says’ when it comes to our bodies. Today our care is more complicated as we enter middle age, and I have been repeatedly let down by the mainstream medical institution. It is my hope that for women of any age, but definitely for us women over 50, that you will find a resource here for help with skin care, your health and beauty as we get older, as well as meaningful dialogue to get your questions, fears and concerns within a commiserating forum answered.
I have also extensively researched bio-identical hormones. I’ve posted about some of that on my site because it was a roller coaster and during the transition from them using natural methods, it continued to be. However; I am enjoying very few symptoms overall during peri-menopause after all that!
I’m the 4th child in a family of 11 children. My parents are still living and active. Genetics will play a huge part in our looks and our health, but we can always improve both! I am a huge advocate of:
- Becoming Your Own Health Advocate
- Acupuncture
- Establishing care with a Naturopathic Doctor and or Homeopathic
- Cleansing
- Organic Eating
- Holistic Dentistry
- Exercise and your Food Choices working in a cohesive manner.
For 16 years I enjoyed a career in telecommunications and computers. For 5 of those years I worked full time, had two small children and was also a representative for a skincare and makeup line; with training in color analysis. I’ve also worked for large real estate development firms and been in accounting for many years as well.
Over eighteen years ago; just before I got pregnant with my 3rdchild, I had a medical procedure that caused extreme painful nerve damage that is still a daily struggle; but I have done mountains of research on alternative health and natural answers to our bodies issues because of it. I am happy to report that working with a Naturopathic Doctor and an Acupuncturist has given me the chance to alleviate a large part of my chronic pain.
I have a daughter who is 25, (and was in the first wave of ‘adhd’ diagnosed children, THAT was an experience and a whole other BLOG!) and two boys, 22 and 17. My 17 year old has Marfan Syndrome; a genetic connective tissue disease that affects his heart, and he is visually impaired, among other things. He was three years old when diagnosed; so I continued to do more research on health & genetics; and why our bodies might fail us.
I have taught my children to eat organic; and to always reach for the natural approach before the mainstream medical one, if possible. My husband of 27 years is a good sport too. I hope I can help you do the same thing! Please email me at kjude@takesomeoldskin.com if you have a concern that isn’t answered here on this site yet or complete enough to help you. I’ve been through a lot, and I am more than happy to share.

I agree with you on going with the holistic and our bodies ability to hear itself ( if you give it the right treatment). I have learned this the hard way too and have gotten past the problems. I also like my yoga . glad you have this up.
I just got back from AZ. I think Michael and John saw each other, but I didn’t get to meet your Mickael. Maybe next time!
Hi, Kirsten – I agree! 28 years ago I was a chubby gal who didn’t exercise much and joined a health club. It was a great move and life-changing experience! I too have coupled that with a lot of reading and organic eating (not all but most). I will definitely take a look at your blog and see what you have found to try a few new things! Thanks! Jane
You are such a good example of what is meant by taking care of ourselves first, even though it goes against our nurturing grain. Kudo’s to you for all the hard work it must have entailed. I would like to take this opportunity to say that ‘anti-aging’ doesn’t just mean our skin, or our looks and wrinkles – it’s a life style we should pursue to add life to our years; not just years to our life…of course I didn’t make that up; but it works.
Learning it the hard way sometimes makes it stick better, huh. Although I seem to always learn things the hard way! I have always wanted to try yoga….my acupuncturist keeps harping on me about that! I know I can’t keep beating myself up at the gym forever….and it’s so good for settling the mind and the soul, which is great. Maybe we will see you at Parent’s weekend? We were actually invited this year…lol
I do love the gym! One thing I added a little over a year ago was lap swimming twice a week. At first I really stunk at it but I have been able to gradually work up my time and laps. My first goal was 30 laps in 30 minutes; now I am up to 52 laps in 43 minutes, plus I do some warm up and cool down drills – which I learned by taking a lesson recently. Talk about cardio and nice fluid motions for the shoulders! Wow, I love it. My health club has both indoor and outdoor pools and I swim in the mornings… it is awesome before work! I enjoy pilates too….but I have to be working out at the gym to do that one!
52 Laps??? I can get through one! Although I can now take my legs up and over my head and touch the floor with my toes….swimming IS awesome for the shoulders, one of my new goals is to redefine that upper body! Wow Jane, I am SO impressed!!!
Kirsten, I had a knee replacement in January this year. I worked at health clubs years ago and it just stuck with me – then I got arthritis primarily in my knees, diagnosed about 6 years ago (hereditary from my dear Grandmother)…so I limped for about 5 years and finally decided to do it (stable in the company, good insurance etc). The physical therapy afterwards was awesome (like personal training 2-3 x/wk! So I have dropped about 15 lbs and like you, trying to be kind to my joints is why I started last year. That swimming is a killer and I feel like a sky rocket when I get done!
The people at the office can barely stand me in the mornings (of course I have been up about 4 hours by the time I see them – haha!). Thanks! Will look more at your products when I get time, we are headed out on vacation this wkend, back 9/8. Have a great Labor Day long weekend!!
Hi! Your cousin Michelle told me about your blog and I LOVE it! I was wondering if you were familiar with/have any thoughts about NuSkin products? Thanks!
Hello Tarah! I gotta give my cousin a big hug! I am familiar with NuSkin; I even sold it a hundred years ago and used it then. It is a good brand…I think it is rather expensive though. The only thing I noticed about the general ingredients is the Polysorbate 20 – which isn’t the hugest concern as far as being a ‘clean’ product; but I try to stay away from it. You can check out any ingredients you find in skin care by checking the site http://www.skindeep.com – there you can search on ingredients and find out the skinny on any toxicity of it or cancer causing agents – which are in SO many skin care lines. For the money – I would push you towards MyChelle Skin care – http://www.mychelle.com or EvanHealy – http://www.evanhealy.com – Dr Perricone’s line would be very comparable to NuSkin and it is very effective and usually cheaper. If you go to the skinstore on my website and search on his products; they discount them often. If you get to the point where you want to know about any others in particular; just let me know, I’ll be glad to give you my thoughts….I think I’ve tried most of them! LOL
Tarah – I should have asked what your skin issues/concerns are. IF you want to tell me I can give you some more information. Each of the lines above treat the skin differently. Aesteticians have varying stratagies they use for the treatment of skin issues. There are sensitive, dry, oily, combination and then aging skin which might include some of the other issues as well. What you want is to bring the skin into balance so you aren’t fighting a T oily zone with dry cheeks; or acne on the mouth and chin area while fighting wrinkles and sagging! (Like me!) – and then sensitive skin issues have a whole lot to do with your diet and the environment/chemicals etc, and those skin types should not be using peels and fruit acids – however; all three lines have a sensitive approach.
