Every day I say: I will get organized. I think about this while I’m doing my skin care routine and thinking about my articles to write, which is why am I writing about organizing on a skin and health care site – because the lack of it is contributing to my stress level, which contributes to problems with your skin and your health. This is the first of many articles in the coming weeks on skin and health and stress and other health issues all contributing to the look of your skin.
I’m not about to address organizing in full on this site – that is why there are professionals. A dear friend is a Certified Professional Organizer & member of the National Association of Professional Organizers and I have learned so much from her. Please visit her website: Organize U
I bring this up because:
- have a zillion jars of this or that skin care and make up all over my bathroom counter and it overwhelms me. I am sure it costs me time every morning getting ready just trying to land my fingers on what I need.
- My closet looks like a tornado went through it and since it’s filled with mostly black I can’t tell you how hard it is to find: workout clothes, my shirts, my sweaters, my SOCKS; because they are all in a heap in the same colored mess. I’m sure that is why I reach for the same jeans and about 3 shirts weekly.
- I have lost over 20 pounds in the last several months, and now I have a closet full of clothing that does not fit. I keep thinking I will get them to a tailor. Even though that takes time and money; I am sure that it is costing me time especially when I am struggling to find something to wear to my part time job.
- Because I have lost weight I still need to obtain well fitting undergarments. Having the proper undies under jeans is a great thing, and buying smaller bras isn’t a favorite, but it’s necessary to have a good fit.
Some Tips:
- Finally Find Your Perfect Jeans - which yeah! I have. I am 5’2″ with a classic petite body; short waisted and narrow on top – and well, just short. SO; buying a size small in regular clothing will not fit the bill; and it perfectly annoys me when a salesperson suggests this. They obviously don’t understand the petite frame. David Kahn Jeans are the best fitting jeans I have personally found – not all of his styles; but there are a couple that fit me well….and just because we are petite; it doesn’t mean we like high water pants. I don’t know how many times I found a well fitting pair of pants; only to give them up because they were too short. For a short person. No justice in that, at all. David Kahn Jeans can be found at Nordstroms and they are expensive, but no more so than ‘settling’ for several pairs of jeans or pants that you are never happy with. I now have 2 pair; and it’s such a relief to reach in my closet for one or the other; knowing at least my bottom half is happy.
- Invest in Good Lingerie: A well fitting bra and undies that look good under jeans are well worth the price. Don’t worry what size your bra fitter says you wear – if it fits; you’ll look fantastic. It was so much easier in my youth to go commando.
- Take Care of Your Clothes: Wash them separately from your husband’s workout clothes and son’s jeans, and hang dry. Colors with colors; if you have more clothes than me, probably fabric with fabric too!
- Get a Good Tailor and Trust Him/Her: My Mother used to adjust my clothes for me and it was heavenly. I knew she loved me and wanted me to look good; and she was brutally honest. Find someone who can fit that bill and use them. The first thing my daughter said to me at Thanksgiving wasn’t, ’hi Mom’; it was: ‘that shirt is way too big for you, it doesn’t look good’. Find my daughter in your tailor.
- Keep it Organized: again, visit the site above. OrganizeU offers online classes and newsletters with tips; it’s well worth the time and investment. At the minimum; group your clothing in colors – it’s amazing what that one trick can do. Find shoe boxes to put underwear in; another one for bras, another one for socks if you are on a budget. I have been told repeatedly that you do not have to spend a fortune in ‘organizing’ things to ‘be’ organized. Recycle boxes, bins, baskets; shopping bags; whatever. I’ve always been a slob, so this is a daily struggle for me, but when I do organize; it’s a very great feeling! And who knows? Maybe the less stress I have will produce less blemishes; and I can reduce my skin care bottles by one! (and just borrow my sons spot treatment?) Then I can take some old skin…and make it better!
