“Let food be thy medicine, thy medicine shall be thy food”—Hippocrates

You are what you eat.  Well, maybe if you think about it that way…you will really think about what you put into your mouth, both for your natural skin health and your overall health.

Today it’s about a Super food called Kefir, A Pro-biotic Partner in our quest for natural healthy skin and overall health.

Kefir can best be described as a sort of liquid, sparkling yogurt with its own distinct and deliciously mild, naturally sweet yet tangy flavor – with a hint of natural carbonation.

  • Kefir has many benefits including better digestion of fats, proteins and carbohydrates and has been known for thousands of years for its anti-aging and immune enhancing properties. Drinking 8 oz of plain Kefir on an empty stomach will bring you benefits all day long.
  • Numbers of studies conducted have documented kefir’s ability to stimulate the immune system, inhibit chronic inflammation and enhance lactose digestion and inhibit tumors, fungi and pathogens – including the bacteria that cause most ulcers.  Inflammation in the body shows up on your face as puffiness and cross linking; (those tiny, fine criss-crossing lines in your face), because it causes the break down of collagen.  Inflammation makes you retain water as well.  The benefits of reducing inflammation are immediate as well as long term. You’ll notice that your skin looks younger, your joints feel better, and your allergy symptoms improve. At the same time, when you reduce inflammation, you also reduce your risk of heart disease, Alzheimer’s disease, cancer, osteoporosis, diabetes, and other complications of aging.
  • Because an imbalance of the good and bad bacteria in your body can cause a multitude of problems and discomforts - Kefir is listed as one of the first foods to grab for relief when you have an overgrowth of yeast in the body.  But be very sure that you choose the unsweetened kind if this is the case.
  • It comes in many berry flavors, and they are awesome, but if you are looking to reduce the sugar, thus the inflammation sugar causes, choose unflavored.  I have gotten to really love the plain Kefir, and the flavored ones are a special treat.  Whole Foods stores carry Kefir and most health food stores will.  I have not seen them in mainstream groceries which is too bad.  Put it on their suggestion list!
